Destinations: Out of Florence

GENERAL TIPS / GETTING THERE

Keep an eye out for fare specials to major European hubs like London, Paris or Frankfurt.  Then add a direct flight to either Florence or Pisa.  Booking the two segments separately is usually much cheaper (allow for at least 3 hours layover). We’re seeing fares in the $700 - $900 range to Europe.  Worth noting is that Alitalia is notorious for losing or delaying luggage, avoid if possible.  There are now direct flights from JFK to Pisa on Delta!

Both Florence (FLR) and Pisa (PSA) airports have easy access into central Florence, about 15 to 60 minutes depending on which airport.  Pisa Airport is generally cheaper due to more airlines flying there, with direct flights from London Gatwick (LGW) and London Stansted (STN).  Try to avoid flying into London Heathrow (LHR) and having to bus to Gatwick (45 min).

The Florence airport is tiny and considered a regional airport.  Only a handful of airlines fly there so prices tend to be higher.  That being said, direct flights from Frankfurt (FRA) to Florence can found on sale (~$120) on Lufthansa (1.5 hour flight).

Flying into Rome is also an option (if the price is right), continuing on to Pisa or Florence by air or rail.  Transfer by train to Florence (about 2 hours) can be a little involved and not fun with heavy luggage (travel light!).
